Eek! My first close-up encounter with a rattlesnake! And my first test-run with my hydration pack. The hydro-pack worked great, once I figured out how to make it stop squirting water everywhere. This hike was amazing, the vast open spaces really skew your sense of distance. It seemed like we went waaaaay farther than we actually did. This was also the first hike I went on where there were animals, besides birds. Four snakes, three deer, and a whole herd of big-horn sheep! The biggest drawback to this hike was the extremely ROCKY road leading up to the trail head. Loaded down SUVs use caution! Overall, I'd give this hike points for excitement, thanks to the rattlesnake!
